A man and his nephew have made an initial appearance in federal court in Los Angeles on charges of conspiracy and illegally exporting sensitive technology to China. Prosecutors say Sam Ching Sheng Lee and his nephew, Charles Lee, were arrested Tuesday. The felony charges were filed Dec. 16 and unsealed Wednesday.

High-level talks are continuing Wednesday night between Time Warner Cable and Viacom over how much the cable company pays to carry channels such as MTV and Comedy Central. If the impasse is not resolved, shows such as “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “The Colbert Report” will be unavailable to about 15.7 million subscribers at a minute past the stroke of midnight.

Police are investigating the taping of an anti-Israeli sign to an Irvine synagogue as a possible hate crime and act of vandalism. Irvine police Lt. Rick Handfield said a sheet of paper was found Tuesday taped on Beth Jacob Congregation of Irvine with an anti-Israeli slogan. He said two more sheets of paper with similar messages were found in the neighborhood.

Police say they have arrested two men — and seek a third — for the stabbng death Friday of a pastor’s son. The murder occured outside a Temecula bar after a brief melee.

A 16-year-old boy shot a homeless man with a paintball gun in front of a pair of undercover cops, Riverside police said today. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of University and Comer avenues, where two undercover Riverside vice officers were working an anti-prostitution stakeout.

Police Wednesday asked for the public’s help as they search for a gunman who left a 16-year-old boy dead and two others wounded in Panorama City.

A 3-year-old boy nearly drowned in his grandparents’ swimming pool in Sylmar Wednesday and was rushed to a hospital in “very critical condition,” a fire official said.
