Industry City Council approves EIR for NFL stadium project

The council voted 5-0 in favor of the report, despite objections from neighboring communities that have concerns about traffic. Opponents have until March 30 to file a lawsuit against the project.


The campaign to bring the NFL back to Southern California made a small but significant step forward over the last week, but officials admit they are still in the early stages of building an $800-million stadium in the city of Industry.

Boyle Heights Rocked By 2 Deadly Shootings

Police say one man was killed and two others wounded Friday in an apparent gang-related shooting in Boyle Heights. The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Francisco Thomas. He died of multiple gun shot wounds sustained while he was standing on the 3300 block of East Olympic Boulevard, according to Los Angeles police Officer Julianne Sohn.

A street vendor who sold tamales in the Westlake district was killed in an apparent robbery, police said Saturday. Cosme Gonzalez, 46, was found on a sidewalk at 325 S. Witmer St. with a gunshot wound to his chest about 9:30 a.m. Friday, Los Angeles police spokeswoman Julianne Sohn said.

Skeleton Found In Fontana Chimney Is Identified

A human skeleton found inside the chimney of a San Bernardino County home has been identified as that of a homeless man who vanished two years ago. Authorities say X-rays of his teeth and skull helped them match the skeleton to 48-year-old Henry Barriga.

Robbery Suspect Arrested While Testing To Be A Cop

Police in Chula Vista say they arrested a robbery suspect when he showed up to take a test to become a police officer. Forty-year-old Romeo Montillano was arrested on Wednesday and booked into San Diego County jail.

Covina Man Sentenced For Defrauding Bank $46M

A former accountant has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for helping defraud a bank of $46 million. A federal judge in Los Angeles sentenced Richard Po-Chun Wong of Covina on Friday. He also must pay restitution.

Villaraigosa Lacks Serious Reelection Competition

The names of 10 candidates for mayor of Los Angeles will appear on Tuesday’s ballot, but with $2.9 million in the bank and no serious competition, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is expected to easily win reelection. This low-key campaign is in sharp contrast to the bitter 2005 race that pitted Villaraigosa against former incumbent Jim Hahn.

Bail Bondsmen File Claim Against O.C. Sheriff

Three bail bond agents have filed a legal claim against Orange County claiming the Sheriff’s Department lets gangs inside the jails to guide inmates to certain bail companies in exchange for kickbacks to gang members.
