Marlon Byrd homered twice to drive in five runs and the Texas Rangers again had their way at home against Joe Saunders, beating the AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels 9-5 on Tuesday night.

Ian Kinsler, Nelson Cruz and David Murphy also went deep for Texas, which ended what had been one of the worst offensive months in team history with a season-high five home runs – four in 3 2-3 innings off Saunders (8-5).

Obama sends consumer-protection bill to Congress

President Obama, pushing a key part of his overhaul of financial regulations, sent to Congress a draft bill that would create the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, which he said would better protect Americans from unscrupulous practices and make financial products easier to understand.

State stands to forfeit $3 billion in possible cuts

State leaders will forfeit more than $3 billion in potential budget cuts when their fiscal year ends at midnight if lawmakers and the governor fail to resolve their dispute over how to end California’s financial crisis.
