Two people were wounded in a gang-related shooting Santa Monica Wednesday night. The shooting happened about 6:15 p.m. at Lincoln Boulevard and Marine Street, Santa Monica police Lt. Mohamed Marhaba said.

Relatives of Darrick Collins, who was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Athens, allege poor training and misuse of deadly force.


The family of an unarmed man fatally shot earlier this month by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy filed a legal claim against the county Wednesday, alleging that sheriff’s deputies are poorly trained and routinely use deadly force on people who don’t pose any threat.



L.A. City Council OKs 12-story condo project near Beverly Center

The 95-unit development will be built at 3rd Street and Wetherly Drive in the Beverly Grove neighborhood under a compromise fashioned by Koretz to satisfy neighborhood opponents.


The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to approve a 12-story condominium building near the Beverly Center that had drawn fire for months from neighborhood activists and a nearby hotel.

Villaraigosa says the AnsaldoBreda facility, which begins construction next summer at the earliest, will attract ‘decent middle-class jobs’ and clean-technology firms to the city.


Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Wednesday praised the planned construction of a light-rail car manufacturing plant along the Los Angeles River, saying it would bring “decent middle-class jobs” and attract clean technology firms to a city hard-hit by the national recession.

WIC nutrition program expands to cover fruits, vegetables

The changes in the supplemental food package better reflect the federal government’s dietary guidelines. Vouchers also can be used now to buy whole grains, canned beans, baby food and tortillas.


Beginning today, women and children who receive food vouchers through the federal government’s WIC program will be able to use them to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
