Plans for former Orange County air base are so grand that some ask whether it can be built.


It’s a hot, windless summer day. Ken Smith is standing in the giant, orange, tethered helium balloon that has become a symbol of everything good and bad about Orange County’s planned Great Park. The sky is blue and from 400 feet up one can see the endless sprawl of homes, the ocean and rolling hills that define this suburban county.



L.A. mayor praises planned light-rail car plant

Villaraigosa says the AnsaldoBreda facility, which begins construction next summer at the earliest, will attract ‘decent middle-class jobs’ and clean-technology firms to the city.


Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Wednesday praised the planned construction of a light-rail car manufacturing plant along the Los Angeles River, saying it would bring “decent middle-class jobs” and attract clean technology firms to a city hard-hit by the national recession.



WIC nutrition program expands to cover fruits, vegetables

The changes in the supplemental food package better reflect the federal government’s dietary guidelines. Vouchers also can be used now to buy whole grains, canned beans, baby food and tortillas.


Beginning today, women and children who receive food vouchers through the federal government’s WIC program will be able to use them to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.

Wildfire Burns 5 Acres In L.A.’s Griffith Park

A wildfire has burned five acres of dry brush in the hills of Griffith Park in Los Angeles. City fire spokesman Greg Acevedo says the fire was reported just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near the zoo on the park’s northeastern edge.

No Reservations: Calif. Parks Not Taking Sign-Ups

The state Department of Parks and Recreation said Tuesday that it will only take reservations at 23 of its 123 campgrounds. Spokesman Roy Stearns says for the rest of the parks, spots will be on a first-come, first-serve basis in March and April.

Stater Bros. starts free prescription-antibiotics program

Albertsons plans to match the offer. Free drugs include ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, penicillin and bactrim. The move is part of Southern California grocery chains’ battle for customers, analysts say.


Southern California’s supermarket price war found a new front Wednesday when Stater Bros. started filling a selection of antibiotic prescriptions for free.



Lakers Sign Guard Thomas Kelati

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent guard Thomas Kelati. The deal was announced Wednesday.  Kelati spent last season playing for Unicaja in Spain, where he averaged 11.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 22.5 minutes.

150-Acre Fire Burns Near Vandenberg Air Force Base
